Description
The 15 Inch Flex-A-Lite Black Magic Xtreme Direct-Fit Electric Fan is designed to meet the cooling demands of the 1987-2006 Jeep Wrangler, freeing up to 5 horsepower and 12 foot-pounds of torque as a belt-driven fan replacement. This S-blade automotive fan moves 3300 cfm (cubic feet per minute) of airflow and comes with a rugged nylon shroud to direct airflow through the radiator core while producing less noise than other cooling car accessories. With overall dimensions of 17-1/2 x 21-1/2 x 4-3/16 inches, this radiator fan draws 18 amps from a 12-volt power supply and is built in the USA with globally sourced materials. This direct-fit car fan bolts to O.E. mounting points of 1987-2006 Jeep Wranglers and includes a Flex-A-Lite Adjustable Thermostat Controller with a built-in relay that allows you to set fan activation temperature between approximately 160 and 240 degrees Fahrenheit. Use the Flex-A-Lite Black Magic Xtreme Direct-Fit Electric Fan as a primary cooling fan or stock clutch fan assembly replacement for improved performance and better fuel economy.

I rebuilt my 2000 Wrangler 4.0 Sport cooling system. This included a high-flow water pump, high-flow thermostat housing, thermostat (stayed 195) and several hoses. I left the OEM radiator as the last thing to change if I needed too. It turned out unnecessary due to the 485.This was completed prior to using the initial cheap fan, so I consider this review more legit as both fans had these advantages during testing.I started off with a cheap fan from AZ running 1100 CFM (at best). It was barely able to keep below 210 when moving. Idle was another story, especially with the AC on. And of course soon as the heat index rose it was simply, and understandably, overwhelmed becoming useless. It's now leaning against a wall in the garage destined for re-purpose or the trash. In walks the 485 Black Magic fan. The build quality is outstanding. The shroud (and its overall design), the blades and fitment.Everything about it feels solid. Importantly I purchased the Flex-a-lite 31165 Variable Speed Control Module for use with this fan, which can be found here:Flex-a-lite 31165 Variable Speed Control ModuleThe actual performance of this fan in combination with the control module is incredible. This fan very, shockingly easily keeps the coolant at whatever temperature I want. This includes a roasting 106+ degree heat index scorcher that happened over the course of the rebuild. On that day the vehicle sat idle in the sun with AC blasting well over 4 hours total. Burnt 1/8th or more of a tank dialing everything making sure all aspects set.The 485 with soft start variable speed module operated with perfection. It brings the temperature down EXTREMELY fast until it reaches the intended setting.I used an ODB2 scanner monitoring the engine coolant, and a new variable voltage dash light I added to the fan circuit to fine tune until I got exactly what I wanted. For reference, the scanner can be found here:OBD2 Scanner, Seekone Professional Car Auto Diagnostic Code Reader OBDII & CAN Vehicle Engine O2 Sensor Systems EOBD Scanners Tool for all OBDII Protocol Cars Since 1996(Upgraded SR860)Now the temps are under control beyond my expectations regardless the hot broiling environment. At full blast the 485 is surprisingly quiet from inside the cab, and even outside too frankly. This thing moves a MASSIVE amount of air. You can feel a LOT of backwash heat from the block when standing around the hood.As mentioned my radiator is OEM. Any after-market radiator with less resistance (but better cooling capacity) would see even more benefit. At this point due to the 485 I no longer need to consider changing the radiator. Thanks to the control module and the way I've hooked it the system is now like a modern vehicle. No more mechanical clutch robbing a bit of grunt. The fan runs independently of ignition, ramping down after shutoff as it sees fit. It's now just a matter of time to see its longevity. To help I made a spot for the control module behind my glove box (this wasn't easy).I did this to protect the module from the environment. It's weather resistant, but that's a far cry from weather proof. After all this work the last thing I want is a failing or corroding module because it's under the hood like everyone else I've seen. This also made it nice to dial in during the scorcher sitting in the passenger seat with AC instead of outside roasting like a steak. The fan + controller + misc including extra wire (10 + 12AWG) isn't cheap. However, a boiling block and resulting systems damage easily outweigh this cost. With the amount of air the 485 moves it'll likely handle most applications. I don't know if it could maintain a Baja truck ripping across a desert, but short of that I'd lay money it'll do the job you need.
